A Minor in History requires 21 credit hours, with a minimum of 12 credit hours in upper division courses (200 or 300 level). Student enrolled in the minor must complete a minimum of 6 hours in U.S. History, 6 hours in European History, and 6 hours in non-Western History.
Student enrolled in the History Education Minor must meet the same requirements as those in the History Minor but must have a minimum of 9 hours in U.S. History.
The Social Science Education Major consists of 60 hours. Students enrolled in the Social Science Education Major must take the introductory United States History sequence (HIS 135 and HIS 136), the introductory European History sequence (HIS 101 and HIS 102), and a minimum of 3 additional upper division elective hours in U.S. History and 3 upper division elective hours in non-Western History.
At least 3 hours of credit must be completed in each of the 5 remaining Social Science areas of Anthropology, Economics, Geography, Politics and Government, and Sociology. A minimum of 21 hours in the Social Sciences must be at the upper division level.
A minimum of 9 hours, with at least 3 hours at the upper division level, must be completed in two of the 5 remaining Social Science areas.
Students must complete one research methods course (ECO 138, GEO 138, POS 138, or PSY 138) and the Social Sciences Seminar (ECO 300.01, GEO 300.10, HIS 300.01, POS 300.01, or SOC 300.01).
Students enrolled in the Social Science Education Major must complete the teaching methods sequence (HIS 290 and HIS 390). An additional 24 hours in Professional Education must be completed as part of the entitlement program leading to secondary certification.
The Department of History offers two teacher education programs designed to prepare students for certification in History and the Social Sciences for secondary schools. The History Education Program offers a major in History with specific coursework in a minimum of three social sciences. The Social Sciences Education major offers a comprehensive plan of study that includes coursework in history, political science, sociology, economics, anthropology and geography. Both sequences are part of the entitlement program leading to secondary certification.
The History Teacher Education Sequence and the Social Science Education Major have identical General Education and Professional Education requirements.
Admission to teacher education programs requires a 2.75 GPA – both overall and in the student’s major. Admission to Student Teaching, the culminating experience for teacher education students, requires successful completion of HIS 290 and HIS 390, maintenance of a 2.75 GPA, and completion of all required administrative procedures.
