The History Major consists of 36 hours. Students enrolled in the History Major must take the introductory United States History sequence (HIS 135 and HIS 136), the introductory European History sequence (HIS 101 and HIS 102), Doing History (HIS 200) and the Senior Seminar (HIS 300). Eighteen hours of elective credit in history must be in upper division courses (200 or 300 level), including at least 6 hours at the 300-level. Six hours of elective credit in history must be in non-Western courses.
Doing History is an introduction to the discipline and should be taken by native students no later than the second semester of their sophomore year and by transfer students no later than the first semester of their junior year. HIS 200 is a pre-requisite for all other 200 and 300 level history courses.
Students enrolled in the Teacher Education Sequence in History are, in fact, History Majors and therefore must meet the requirements listed above the History Majors. In addition, student in the Teacher Education Sequence must complete the teaching methods sequence (HIS 290 and HIS 390) and must have a minimum of 9 hours in U.S. History. Students must also complete a 9-hour interdisciplinary area including Economics (ECO 105), Politics and Government (POS 101, 105, or 106) and Geography (GEO 135 or 140). An additional 24 hours in Professional Education must be completed as part of the entitlement program leading to secondary certification.
Students seeking a Bachelor of Arts in History degree must complete 12 hours of credit in a foreign language. A minor is recommended, although not required. Those students choosing not to complete a minor must complete a 9-hour concentration in an area other than History and Foreign Language, with at least 3 hours at the upper division level.
Students seeking a Bachelor of Science in History must complete a minor in an area other than History and Foreign Language. Although the department offers the Bachelor of Science option, we strongly recommend that students who are serious about the study of history pursue a Bachelor of Arts Degree.
