Title of Lesson: The Impact of Warfare on Individual Emotions

Focus/Summary:
The focus of this lesson is the impact of warfare on the individual,
primarily during the Pacific Campaign of World War 11. A summarization
of events during the Pacific Campaign, primarily the island hopping
of General MacArthur in the South Pacific will the set the stage
for the lesson. Analyzing photographs and paintings of the Battle
of Peleliu and discussion of student reaction to them will help
achieve the focus of the lesson.

Habit of Mind:
To perceive past events and issues as they were experienced by people
at the time, to develop historical empathy as opposed to present-mindedness.
Objective:
To gain historical empathy for those involved in warfare by analyzing
primary source photographs and secondary source paintings.
Procedure:
1. General MacArthur and the War in the Pacific: (20 minute discussion)
2. Pictures from Peleliu: (5 minute observation)
a. Primary Source Photographs
b. Secondary Source Paintings
3. Impact of Warfare: (5 minute question answering)
a. What emotions do you feel engulf the individual(s) in the photographs?
b. What emotions do you feel the artist is trying to portray in
the pictures?
c. What emotions do you feel when analyzing the photographs and
pictures?
d. From your analyzing of these pictures, what observations can
you make about the impact of warfare on an individual?

Assessment:
"Interview With a Veteran"
Interview a veteran of a foreign war and inquire about how their
experiences impact their emotional state during and after their
involvement. Compile this information into
a biographical article on that individual to turn in and share with
the class at a later date.
