Lesson Title: The Chicano Movement ---
Comparing Plights of Civil Rights

Focus/Summary: This lesson deals with the Civil Rights Movement and inequalities that existed between groups in the United States. There were various movements operating simultaneously during this time period aimed at enhancing the American Experience for various groups. The goal of this lesson is to compare and contrast these movements, their outcomes, and relevance in today's American culture.

Vital Theme and Narrative:

(A) Values, beliefs, political ideas, and institutions. (B) Comparative history of major developments. (C) Patterns of social and political interaction

Habit of Mind:

(A) perceive past events and issues as thy were experienced by people at the time, to develop historical empathy as opposed to present?mindedness. (B) acquire at one and the same time a comprehension of diverse cultures and of shared humanity (C) prepare to live with uncertainties and exasperating, even perilous unfinished business, realizing that not all problems have solutions

Objectives: At the conclusion of this lesson, students should be able to give at least four examples of segregation and integration within the United States during the 1960s and 1970s. These examples should fall under the categories of African American, Latin American, Asian American, and Native American. Each student should be able to name one historical figure from each movement as well as one major event.

Procedures/Activities:
The lesson will require approximately three class periods
Day 1

Students will be split into three groups each specializing in a separate group. Each group will be given a brief summary of the Chicano Movement to use as their case study. By comparing and contrasting they will create a 12 Slide Power Point Presentation based on the following research. Each slide should contain at least one visual image.
Major Political Figures and Activist Groups (3 slides)
Examples of Peaceful Protests (3 slides)
Examples of Violent Protests (3 slides)
Remnants of the movement today (3 slides)

Day 2

Using an LCD player with proper overhead, students will present their slideshows to the class and compare their movement with the summary
of the Chicano Movement.
