I have constructed the following guides to help students think historically while examining primary sources. The terminology used in the Annotated Analysis Guides is drawn from Sam Wineburg, a cognitive studies researcher whose focus is the discipline of history.

I have purposefully arranged the guides to help teachers and students consider the relationships among First-/ Second-/ and Third-Order documents. The guides embellish two questions historians always ask about documents:

  1. Who created the document?
  2. What were their motivations?
